A year ago on Mother's Day, I launched a home-based Pilates studio for women. It was a leap of faith, after having left the security of the corporate world. Would anyone come?
At first, clients were made up of friends and family. Then one day, an enquiry came from a complete stranger, searching for pre-natal Pilates. Today, close to 90% of my clients are people who found me online, with whom I've gotten to know better (Hello neighbours!). Thank you for trusting me in your Pilates journey, and taking a chance on my little home studio.
Yet the year has not been an easy journey.
Some days: Deeply fulfilling
Other days: I wonder if I've made the right decision to leave the stability of the corporate world.
But this journey accelerated my growth in ways a stable office job probably couldn’t:
✨ Resilience
✨ Teaching skills
✨ Entrepreneurship
✨ Faith
Here are 10 reflections on my one-year Faith in Pilates journey.
Bring my authentic self to the table. Your tribe will find you.
I decided to be an instructor who teaches with intention while balancing that with commercial demands. Planks? Yes, but I make sure you learn the principles well. There will be people who appreciate your style.
The more I teach, the better I get.
I now cue less, observe and respond more. Clients connect better to the exercises too. So if you are new to something and doubting yourself, just start, and keep at it.
Be teachable. Fail fast, learn faster.
Appraisals are immediate. Being a very self-aware and sensitive person, I pick up a lot from people's tone, choice of words and body language. I use the 'data' to fine tune my programming, cues and even how I relate to the clients. Therefore, I don't believe in hardselling as it is apparent whether a client will return through their verbal and non-verbal signals.
Verbalise your intentions. Don’t keep them in your head.
Harnessing the success from when I had to conduct corporate presentations. It helps clients connect the dots to the exercise programme I designed for them. Clarity builds trust.
Empathy over policy. This goes a long way.
I always put myself in the shoes of my clients, and treat them like how I would love businesses to treat me.
But hold appropriate boundaries - it will make you a happier instructor.
Discern reviews and feedback.
Act on what’s constructive, and accept that there will be different strokes for different folks. This has been hard-hitting but accept that clients will also come and go - I grieve the end of each client-instructor relationship, and tell myself to carry on.
Followers ≠ sales
Social media is a tool for people to validate your vibe and authenticity. Use it strategically but don’t fret over the need to be always showcasing your life 24/7. Instead, focus on building a good marketing funnel and consumer journey.
It takes a village 🤍
My family made it possible for me to teach at non-traditional hours. Plus they’ve generously shared their space and welcomed clients to my home studio. Have you been greeted by the messy hair toddler yet? :P
The battle belongs to the Lord.
Faith is my baptism name. I chose it because I needed more of it. So in my anxiety, doubts and low points, God has shown up in ways that I can only attribute to works of divine providence/intervention.
My verdict, a year in? I’m glad I took the leap.
Happy Mothers’ Day, and happy birthday to Faith in Pilates! ❤️
